Basic Course
Students are introduced to the various fields of vocational education via the Basic Course which lasts from 10 to 40 weeks, depending on the chosen field of education. All students are granted participation in a Basic Course (60 weeks including practical training).
Main course
In order to continue to the main course, students are required to sign an apprenticeship contract with one or more companies/enterprises. In some fields of education, an external apprenticeship agreement is not mandatory, but may be substituted by a work practice programme at the college.
Contract with a business
After having signed an apprenticeship contract with a company or an enterprise, the student will work and receive training in the given company for about two-thirds of the remaining study period, while the last part of the study period is spent at the college, in modules of 5 to 10 weeks.
Duration
The duration of the studies varies from field to field, from about one and a half years up to about five and a half years. The average duration for the completion of a full programme is between three and four years.
Home or abroad
The apprenticeship contract may be signed with a company in Denmark or abroad. The only requirement is that the company complies with the Danish rules governing the specific field of education, and that the company must meet the demands listed for qualifying as a venue for work practice. Companies in Denmark must be approved by a national board and companies abroad may be approved by SDE College.
A company may sign an apprenticeship contract with a student for a limited part of the education period, e.g. if the company is highly specialised and cannot undertake all obligations of the full curriculum. Contracts with companies abroad are usually signed for a limited part of the education only. It is the responsibility of the student and the technical college to find a second company for the student to enter into a contract with to cover the full education period.
